Somatotypical diversity of Physical Education students
at the University of Zielona Góra
The aim of this study is to show the level of physical development of students of Physical Education at the University of Zielona Góra compared to other Polish academic centres, as well as the trend of changes in body composition in the years 2004–2012.
The study presents the results of somatotypical tests conducted by the author in the academic year 2011/2012 among the third year students of Physical Education
Somatic measurements were conducted in accordance with Martin’s techniques and they included body height (B-v), the height of sst, sy, a, da III points, the width of the shoulders (a-a), the width of the hips (ic-ic), the width and depth of the chest (thl –thl, xi-ths), circumference of the chest at maximum inhalation and exhalation, the circumference of the waist and hips , arm circumference at rest and in tension, the circumference of the thigh and lower leg, the thickness of skinfolds at the abdomen, hip, shoulder, under the lower corner of the shoulder blade, on the lower leg and the width of wrist epiphysis (cr-cu), elbow epiphysis (cl-cm), and knee epiphysis (epl-epm), as well as the body weight [2, 6].
The above characteristics were used to calculate the indexes of body proportions and compositions according to the typology of Adam Wanke [9] and Ewa Kolasa [4].
The results of the author’s own research were comparatively referred to the results of students in the academic centres of Poznań, Rzeszów, Łódź, Radom, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Gdańsk and Katowice.
After the analysis the following conclusions were drawn:
1. On average, the Pphysical Education students at the University of Zielona Góra and at the Academy of Physical Education in Poznań have the highest body height, whereas the students of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice are the shortest.
2. In comparison with other academic centres in Poland, the students at the University of Zielona Góra have the most stout bodies, whereas the male students at the Academy of Physical Education in Gdańsk, and the female students at the University of Rzeszów are the slimmest.
3. Compared to students in Rzeszów, Poznań, Łódź, Gdańsk and Katowice, the Physical Education students at the University of Zielona Góra have significantly longer bodies, longer legs, wider hips, larger circumferences of the arm, thigh and lower leg, thicker fat and greater body weight, but they also have significantly smaller upper limbs, shoulder width, as well as the width and depth of the chest.
4. The group of Physical Education female students at the University of Zielona Góra, in relation to the groups from Rzeszów, Poznań and Gdańsk, have significantly longer legs, wider hips, deeper chests, broader ( wrist and elbow) epiphyses, and larger circumferences of the arm (at rest and in tension), but significantly shorter body trunks, narrower shoulders and chests, narrower knee epiphysis, smaller thigh circumference, less thick skinfolds on the hip and lower body weight in relation to female students from Łódź, Katowice, Gdańsk and Rzeszów.
5. The group of students from the University of Zielona Gora, compared to university students from Poznań, Rzeszów, Łódź, Gdańsk and Katowice, have significantly higher average indexes of the torso, pelvis, chest, Rohrer and hip-height, but they have smaller indexes of shoulders, shorter arms and legs, and smaller indexes of limbs and shoulder - height.
6. Compared to the other academic centres, the Physical Education female students at the University of Zielona Góra have significantly higher indexes of the shoulders, pelvis, Rohrer, leg length, shoulder-height, and hip-height, but lower indexes of the torso, chest and the limbs.
7. As for the body built, the athletic element V is predominant among the male students, and the leptosomic element I predominates among the females.
8. The somatic formula IAVH is characteristic for the group of students from Zielona Góra, the VIHA is characteristic for the students in Gdansk and the candidates for the Academy of Physical Education in Poznań, the VHIA is typical for the teams from Gorzów and Radom, and the IVAH is characteristic for the students from Rzeszów.
9. The groups of female students from Zielona Góra, Poznań and Radom are characterised by the somatic formula IYHA, whereas the female students from Łódź are mainly characterised by the element A, and the groups of female students in Gorzów Wielkopolski and Gdańsk are slightly different.
10. For the last eight years (2004–2012), the tendency for body built leptosomisation has been observed among the students in Zielona Góra with simultaneous elimination of the athletic element V and H.
