From Vice-chancellor’s Desk …

Dear All,

At the outset, I welcome all of you to the fold of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University. Today education has become a very powerful tool for peaceful social transformation and for overall development of any nation. It not only provides bread and butter to people but it also equips them to become more responsible and successful citizen.

India has the second largest education system in the world today but, unfortunately we hardly could accommodate 10 percent of its population in the higher education.

Distance education has been established as available alternative mode of education. It makes use of print as well as modern audio-video-media in order to make it more effective. Distance education gives utmost importance to learners. The quality aspect is assessed by Distance Education Council.

I am very pleased in introducing various academic programmes through Distance Learning. This is a sincere effort made by our university to equip those students who are deprived of the golden opportunities of higher education in life. This mode of learning will definitely will prove as a helping hand to learn, understand and use skills appropriately. It will alist learners success in fruitful manner.

I wish you well in future

Dr. Kamal Singh

Vice Chancellor

2 About Distance Education

21st century is “Knowledge Century” which will provide unending opportunities for learning and education. There is tremendous churn taking place in higher education all over the world .It is changing radically, by becoming organically flexible in terms of diversity of programmes, in its structure, curricula and delivery systems. In a global scenario powered by global markets, higher education institutions must transform to meet the multi-faceted needs of the changing context – professionals who require in-service training and upgrading, unemployed persons who want to attain job-specific skills, industries and institutes that wish to collaborate to provide training, etc. Education and training must be all-inclusive and reflect the vastly diversified current economic situation and various fields of human-power needs.11th Five year-plan emphasizes on Broadening Access to Higher Education by expanding it and making it available to all through ODL.

Distance Learning opens fresh opportunities to obtain higher education without the constraints of time and location. Distance Education is only long-term solution for meeting the increased demands in education in a dispassionate and rational manner and making education more accessible to masses. This is particularly relevant in the context of vast country like India, considering its huge population and geographical distances as ODL offers a country like India, unprecedented opportunities to enhance its educational systems.

2.1 Institute of Distance Education

Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University is pleased to offer Open Distance Learning (ODL) Education which is the ultimate need of the time. Open Distance Learning has the vast potential for taking Higher Education to more and more people. This system caters also for in service persons for whom it is second chance as well as for regular learners. It therefore needs to be provided greater thrust by integrating utility courses with personal development with socio-economic benefits.

Institute of Distance Education, of SGBAU, Amravati provides flexibility in terms of admission, learning and achieving goals, maintains standard of higher education and offers Degrees/Diploma/Certificate. There is one more feature that the Syllabus of the courses in the ODL mode is same as the courses of the regular or conventional mode.

2.2. Distance Learning – A concept

Distance Learning offers millions of people the opportunity to advance their education without the time and constraints of physically being on a campus. Distance learning is rapidly growing in popularity as access to high-speed internet spreads across the globe, and higher education becomes more commonplace

Distance Education serves the persons living in the isolated areas with inadequate facilities of formal education system. Distance education has taken systematic teaching -learning process to persons living in isolated areas where facilities for the traditional form of class room teaching can not be developed. Further, as distance learning addresses the needs of specific target groups, there is a great variation in the range of programmes offered.” Distance education also serves the dropouts, older students and disadvantaged groups. Distance system also serves the persons involve in the community commitments. The open Universities have also increased access for other disadvantaged groups including older students, who may be geographically isolated or excluded from regular classes because of shift patterns, seasonal or other kind of work and family and community commitments. Distance system of education utilizes printed material and non-print media support .Distance education is the form of indirect instruction. It is imparted by technical media such as correspondence, printed material, teaching and learning aids, audiovisual aids, radio, television and computers.

Distance Learning offers SGBAU Students a flexible convenient way to earn college credit. Instead of attending conventional class on-campus, Students satisfy programme objective independently using self instructional study material, giving busy students access to programme work anytime anywhere with assignments, etc. Counseling/Contact sessions at study centre has an instructor who leads the programme and provides assistance.

2.3 Distance Education Study Centre

Distance Education Study Centre is with the cause of society and with the motto ‘Education to All’. Such centers, generally, accommodate several of the following characteristics like Delivery modes that respect the learner’s need, Open admission and enrolment, Learner choice for programme curriculum, Accommodation of different learning styles, Recognition of prior formal and non-formal learning, Credit Coordination, Low on-site and institution-specific residency requirements, Minimal formal course prerequisites, Continuous enrollment, Self-pacing, etc.

In other words, the Distance Education Study Centre is an alternative system of education which aims to empower individuals through appropriate skill development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and community. These centers would be certainly a source of economic growth as they provide an educated and skilled workforce that improves the quality of life for individual students, institution, communities and the nation. These centers would prove as value addition in the credential of the institutions.

3.0. Programmes

3.1. Learning Methods:

SGBAU recognises that for some people, returning to study can be daunting. Especially whilst holding down a job, facing communication and location problem and other commitments. Our Distance Learning study mode is ideal for students who need to adapt around work, family, or other commitments. A variety of delivery methods and additional features ensures that learning is still collaborative, interactive, and interesting. The programme, including examinations, can be undertaken from anywhere in the world.

Students in the distance learning class possess a more independent and conceptual learning style, have the highest average scores in all of the student achievement areas. People with the lowest scores in student achievement in the distance learning course have a more social and conceptual learning style. Students with both a social and applied learning style perform much better in the on-campus class. The outcomes of the Academic Research suggests that successful distance education students favour an independent learning environment while successful on-campus students show a preference for working with others.

  • Face to face teaching by recognized teachers/Professionals/ Academicians from the respective field at Study Center.

  • Self Instructional Material (SIM) will be provided to the student for self Study either in the form of Printed Material or e-book.
