    IS YOUR BAGGAGE INSURED?

  • MOD Policy (JSP 752, Chapter 10, Section 4) advises that baggage should always be insured against the risk of loss or damage whilst in transit.

  • Compensation will not be paid for any loss or damage which arises from the ordinary risks of civil life, such as fire, theft, loss in transit, etc. The fact that these risks arise during Service life does not mean that they are uninsurable risks. Service personnel are therefore advised to insure their baggage against loss or damage.

  • Individuals travelling at public expense aboard RAF aircraft should also seek to minimise the risk of loss/damage by carrying any valuable items as hand luggage.

  • Claims for compensation for lost or damaged baggage should be made against an insurance company. Failure to obtain compensation, because a claim is not made in due time or is otherwise invalid, or because insurance had not been effected, will not be accepted as grounds for a claim for compensation from public funds.

  • Any loss or damage to baggage/personal items must be reported immediately upon discovery to the appropriate Duty Air Movements/Air Terminal Staff who will investigate the loss and complete the Lost/Damaged Baggage Form (overleaf).

    Existing Insurance Policy?

Compensation claims for any loss/damage should be directed to your insurance company.

If you are required to pay an insurance policy excess fee/charge because of your claim, this may be reimbursed by the MOD. If an excess fee is paid, please complete and forward the following documents to the address below:

  • MOD Form 441

  • Lost/Damaged Baggage Form (overleaf)

  • Documentary evidence showing the Policy Excess fee/amount paid

    No Insurance?

Claims for compensation for lost/damaged baggage because insurance had not been effected will not be accepted as grounds for compensation from public funds. However, where individuals can provide evidence that insurance cover was unobtainable, a claim may be allowed in accordance with JSP 752, Chapter 10. Claimants should complete and forward the following documents to the address below:

  • MOD Form 441

  • Lost/Damaged Baggage Form (overleaf)

  • Written evidence as to why insurance was unobtainable

  • Proof of ownership/purchase of items lost or damaged (receipts, credit card slip, warranty card etc)

Eligible claims for compensation must be submitted

within one calendar month of the date the loss or

damage occurred, whether or not full information is available, to the following address:
